10 Move Out Tips for Stress-Free Moving Experience

One of the things we hear often from our clients is how draining a move can be. It seems that no matter how well you plan, the experience is stressful and exhausting and takes a toll on relationships! If you are gearing up for a move, these helpful tips will minimize the stresses of the move out. It is important to have a plan: One of the stressful aspects of a move is that it entails numerous tasks that must be accomplished in a short period of time and are financially costly if not done right.   1. Schedule move out cleaning- Including carpet cleaning as soon as you know your move out date and turnover requirements. Most landlords require a professional cleaning and walk through for you to get your full deposit back. A professional move out cleaning by a reputable company is worth every penny. It takes a very time consuming and stressful task off your plate and if you hire a true professional; guarantees a full return on your deposit!   2. Buy boxes and packing supplies early- This will allow you to get a jump on cleaning way ahead of time
  3. Start early- Begin packing all non-essentials a little at a time as soon as you know you will be moving.
  4. Get rid of junk- It is amazing how much stuff we accumulate that we never use. This is the perfect opportunity to simplify, organize and down size. While starting with non-essentials, toss or donate unused items, trash and junk as you go. It will also make unpacking much more pleasant when you are not sifting through junk twice!
  5. Set an appointment for Good Will or the Salvation Army to come for your donation items- This will save you time and effort.
  6. Label everything and pack like items together- When you skip this step in the hurried moving process, unpacking becomes more stressful than the move. Color code your boxes with: “Kitchen”, “Living room”, “Baby’s room”, “Linens”, etc. If you stick to this tip, unpacking will be a breeze and it will be much easier to locate packed items if you need them.
  7. Don’t wait until the last minute- Many clients underestimate how time consuming a move can be and wait until just a couple days before (or even the day of in many cases). This becomes a costly mistake both for peace of mind and the pocket book. When you don’t meet your deadline and have to reschedule there are cancelation fees, emergency fees and much more involved.
  8. In the weeks leading up to your move, use up pantry items and minimize grocery shopping- Moving excessive boxes of perishables for a close move or tossing out food before a long move is costly.
  9. Set up utility turn off day but be sure all utilities are left on until your final move out clean is finished- Check with your landlord to confirm their policies for final turnover of the unit including utilities, keys, final walk through etc.
  10.
